Steve Nash NBA’s Player Of the Week
After leading the Suns to a perfect 4-0 week and a 10-game win streak, guard Steve Nash was named the NBA Western Conference Player of the Week for December 4-10, the NBA announced today. This is his sixth career NBA Player of the Week honor, first this season and fifth as a Sun for Nash, who also won the weekly award on Jan. 8, 2006, Nov. 28, 2005, Feb. 14, 2005, Dec. 27, 2004, and one as a member of the Dallas Mavericks on Dec. 16, 2001.
Nash guided the team to a 4-0 record last week and averaged a league-high 14.3 assists to go along with his 20.0 points on 57.4 percent shooting, including a sizzling 58.8 percent from behind the arc. The NBA’s assist leader for the third consecutive season opened the week with a NBA season-high 20 dishes (his second career 20-assist game and only the ninth in franchise history) and 11 points in only 33 minutes in a 127-102 blowout victory vs. Sacramento on Dec. 5.
The 11-year NBA veteran followed that effort with a regular season career-high 42 points (prev. 39, Dallas vs. Portland, Dec. 11, 2001), 13 assists and six rebounds in a 161-157 double-overtime thriller at New Jersey on Dec. 7, which tied for the fourth-highest scoring game in NBA history and the most since 1990. The 161 points scored by Phoenix trailed only a club-best 173-point game vs. Denver on Nov. 10, 1990. Nash concluded the week with 16 points and 14 assists in a 116-111 triumph at Boston on Dec. 8 and an 11-point and 10-assist performance in a 114-84 win at Charlotte on Dec. 10.
The reigning back-to-back NBA’s Most Valuable Player is averaging a career-high 20.4 points and a career-best 11.6 assists in 17 games this season, and is on pace to become the first NBA player to average over 20 points and 11 assists in a single season since Magic Johnson and former Sun Kevin Johnson did it in 1989-90.
Phoenix (13-6) takes the NBA’s longest active win streak at 10 games into tonight’s game vs. the Eastern Conference leading Orlando Magic (15-7) at 5 p.m. at the Amway Arena. The contest will be televised locally on My45. Another victory tonight would match the club’s second longest win streak in franchise history (11, four other times, most recently Feb. 8-March 6, 2006).
